Gazing up at Kong A Leng, have you ever imagined yourself standing atop this “Little Wugong Mountain”? Kong A Leng, also known as Rooster Ridge, offers a unique hiking experience, a blend of Hong Kong’s tranquil countryside and Shenzhen’s towering skyline. This eight-kilometer hike starts near Fung Kat Heung Road, a short minibus ride from Yuen Long Station. The trail itself is a mature route, primarily along the mountain’s “dragon’s back”. Kong A Leng offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, including Tai Mo Shan and Ma On Shan, as well as the sprawling cityscape of Shenzhen. The terrain is mostly grassy, with intriguing rock formations scattered throughout. It’s a popular spot for mountain bikers too, so be prepared to share the trail. Remember to bring plenty of water, at least 2.5 liters per person, including electrolyte water. The entire hike is exposed to the sun, so sun protection is vital. Hiking boots or shoes with good grip are recommended, although climbing sticks are optional for experienced hikers. The Two Steps Road app offers detailed trail maps for Kong A Leng. After your hike, the 77 minibus can take you to Sheung Shui for easy access back to Yuen Long or Lok Ma Chau. While beautiful year-round, the grass begins to turn yellow by late September. So, for the most vibrant photos, plan your Kong A Leng adventure early in the season. A hike up Kong A Leng is not just a physical challenge, it’s a visual feast, a unique blend of nature and urban landscapes that will leave a lasting impression.
