Smell that earthy aroma? That’s the Kompostwerk Lobau. Vienna’s largest composting facility. It’s been transforming organic waste since 1991. A true testament to the city’s commitment to sustainability.
Did you know this impressive facility was once considered the largest of its kind in Europe? At least it held that title in 1993. The Kompostwerk Lobau sits on over 77000 square meters. It processes a staggering 100000 tons of biowaste annually. That’s a lot of banana peels and coffee grounds.
Before the Kompostwerk Lobau’s construction Vienna already collected organic waste. It started small in gardens and residential areas using special “Biotonnen”. Collection expanded citywide. Early composting attempts took place in temporary locations. This proved insufficient for the growing amount of biowaste.
The Kompostwerk Lobau boasts two massive paved areas each roughly 26000 square meters. These are where the composting magic happens. Underground reservoirs hold rainwater and seepage water a total capacity of 1300 cubic meters. This water is safely channeled into the city’s sewage system. The plant even has its own well for operational water.
The Kompostwerk Lobau doesn’t just handle household biowaste. It also receives organic materials from Vienna’s city gardens and forestry department. Even the city’s Christmas trees find their final resting place here after the holiday season. But not all is composted. Excess leaves from parks and gardens are used for energy production.
The finished compost is top-notch. It’s classified as A+ the highest quality. This means it’s suitable for organic farming. A significant amount goes to the city’s agricultural operations. The rest is available for free to Viennese residents in household quantities at designated recycling centers. Some is sold commercially and some is even used to make peat-free potting soil a product called “Guter Grund”.
The Kompostwerk Lobau holds both the Austrian and European compost quality seals. This is a prestigious honor reflecting its dedication to high standards and sustainable practices.
