Have you ever heard of the Salesians? In Kobylisy, a northern district of Prague, their legacy is intertwined with the history of this fascinating place. Kobylisy Square, founded in 1925, is more than just a bustling intersection. This square marks the heart of Kobylisy. The name itself harks back to a time when Kobylisy was a humble village, part of the Libeň dominion. It was only in 1922 that Kobylisy became part of the ever-expanding city of Prague. But let’s get back to the Salesians. This Catholic religious order dedicated to the education of young people established a significant presence here. Picture this: It’s 1934, and the cornerstone for the grand Salesian boarding school for boys is laid right here in Kobylisy. The church of this boarding school, dedicated to St. Theresa of Jesus, became a beacon for the community. This place was alive with the energy of youth – a theater, a school, and a playground all within these hallowed grounds. The Salesians’ mission to serve, especially the underprivileged, was evident in every corner. However, the Second World War cast a long shadow over Kobylisy. The Salesian premises were shut down during the war. Though they reopened briefly afterward, their time was cut short. The communist regime seized control, forcing the friars and their young charges out. It was a dark period for the Salesians in Kobylisy. The school, once filled with laughter and learning, was repurposed for children with speech difficulties. The once vibrant Salesian Theatre was renamed Klicpera’s Theatre. However, the story doesn’t end there.
