Think of Bad Cannstatt’s Altstadt. Right here stands the Klösterle. It is a beautiful historic building. Today we explore Stuttgart’s oldest house. This house was built around 1463. The Klösterle is located on the edge of Bad Cannstatt’s Altstadt.

The Klösterle served as a home for Beginen. These women followed a liberal religious order. They lived without strict rules. The building includes a Gothic chapel. This chapel makes it unique in Europe.

Over the centuries the Klösterle changed owners. It fell into disrepair. Half-hearted repairs were not enough. In the 1980s Stuttgart decided to restore it. The plan was to bring it back to its original state. This restoration was not easy.

Workers took the entire building apart. They saved as much of the original material as possible. In 1983 the Klösterle was rebuilt. The initiative “Pro Alter Cannstatt” helped fund the project.

Today the Klösterle houses a restaurant. It also houses the Stadtmuseum Bad Cannstatt. Nick Hemberger delights guests with Swabian dishes. The restaurant is a gourmet destination. The Klösterle also has a Weinstube. It offers regional wines.

The Stadtmuseum is in a former barn. It showcases the history of Bad Cannstatt. Bad Cannstatt was once independent. It joined Stuttgart in 1905. The museum was renovated in 2008. It features an exhibit on the town’s early history. Bad Cannstatt is Stuttgart’s oldest district. Humans lived here 250000 years ago. The Romans built a fort here. It helped them resist the Germanic tribes.
