Whispers from the past echo here at Klosterfriedhof Oberzell. This tranquil cemetery holds centuries of stories. It is more than just a resting place. It is a living testament to the rich history of Kloster Oberzell.
Founded in 1128 by Premonstratensian canons this monastery saw both glory and decline. Initially a double monastery it housed both men and women. The women’s convent Unterzell was founded around 1230. Sadly it was plundered during the Great Peasant War of 1525. The monastery thrived under Abt Oswald Loschert from 1747 to 1785. The famous Balthasar Neumann designed the baroque buildings we see today. His sons finished the impressive staircase in 1760.
Secularization struck in 1803. The once powerful abbey was dissolved. The last abbot received a pension. The church was deconsecrated. The valuable library went to Wurzburg University. The monastery’s vast possessions were confiscated. This included extensive vineyards orchards forests and properties in surrounding villages. Much of the monastery’s art and archives were lost forever. A sad end for a once thriving community.
However this is not the end of the story. In 1812-13 a unique little summer palace was built on the monastery walls. Architect Peter Speeth designed this beautiful building in the Classical style. Jewish banker Joel Jakob Hirsch commissioned it as his summer residence. It’s a striking contrast to the older buildings.
The buildings also housed a printing press factory. Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Friedrich Bauer established Koenig & Bauer there in 1817. This company went on to become world famous. It operated in the monastery until 1901.
In 1901 a new chapter began. The Congregation of the Holy Childhood of Jesus bought the monastery. They restored the church and made it their motherhouse. The herb garden established in 1990 is now famous. It has appeared in numerous TV shows and articles. The sisters continue the monastery’s legacy of service. They have a strong relationship with the Wurzburg Klostermedizin research group.
