Picture this a bustling yet tranquil suburb nestled in the heart of Windhoek. This is Klein Windhoek. Its story begins long before the arrival of modern Namibia.

Klein Windhoek literally meaning Little Windhoek in German is the oldest part of Windhoek. It all started in 1840. Jonker Afrikaner and his 800 followers established a settlement here. They sought the guidance of missionaries. The Rhenish Missionary Society promptly built the first house.

Imagine the scene missionaries Carl Hugo Hahn and Franz Heinrich Kleinschmidt arriving in 1842. They initially named the place Elberfeld. However Jonker Afrikaner’s name for the settlement ultimately prevailed. A few years later Wesleyan missionaries replaced the Rhenish ones.

Religious influence continued to shape Klein Windhoek. Roman Catholic missionaries arrived in 1896. They acquired the Rhenish Missionary Society’s land nine years later. They transformed it into a thriving orchard and vineyard. Klein Windhoek even operated as a separate municipality in the early 1900s.

In 1909 Windhoek became an independent municipality. Gustav Voigts became its first mayor. Amandus Fritsche held the same position in Klein Windhoek. However by 1921 Klein Windhoek fell under Windhoek’s jurisdiction.

Today Klein Windhoek remains an affluent area. Several embassies call it home. The Russian Embassy and the South African High Commission are just two examples. The Klein Windhoek River splits the suburb in two. Windhoek’s city center sits atop a hill overlooking it.
