Built in stages between 1957 and 1969 Klastorpsskolan stands proudly. This Stockholm school’s design is the work of architect Curt Bjorklund. Commissioned by Stockholms Folkskoledirektion it consists of two main sections. A long classroom wing runs parallel to Atterbomsvagen. A separate building houses the cafeteria and gymnasium. Connecting these is a portico leading into the schoolyard. Here you’ll find artistic embellishments. Two smaller concrete carvings by Siri Derkert are embedded in the path near the cafeteria entrance. Klastorpsskolan isn’t just about classrooms and textbooks. It’s about history. The school and the surrounding Klastorp area are named after a property owned in the 1860s by city treasurer Claes Augustin Montelius. His Villa Claestorp from 1870 still stands. You can find it at Gjorwellsgatan 48. It sits on the slope south of Klastorpsskolan. The school itself is a community hub. It serves children from preschool to grade three. Around 250 students are taught by approximately 15 teachers. There’s an after-school program and a reception area. The entrance and hall are accessible to wheelchair users. Since 1992 Klastorpsskolan has been part of a unit with Essingeskolan on Stora Essingen. Klastorpsskolan prides itself on its focus on math and chess. It uses an exploratory teaching method. The school emphasizes safety engagement and equality of value. Beyond academics Klastorpsskolan offers much more. The schoolyard is a green space with a playground. It features swings a football field and climbing structures. There is even an obstacle course and a hopscotch grid painted on the ground. Close by are parks perfect for outdoor activities. Even the meals are noteworthy. They are prepared at Eiraskolan with locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Each day students can choose from two hot meals one always vegetarian. A student food council influences the menu. School and after-school programs work together. The after-school program features activities based on the children’s interests. It is a vibrant place where learning fun and community thrive. Klastorpsskolan isn’t just a school. It is a lively part of the Stockholm community.
