Climbing Kite Rock. That’s a phrase that echoes the spirit of adventure here on Tung Lung Chau. Kite Rock isn’t just a scenic viewpoint. It’s a challenge for climbers, a canvas of volcanic rock etched against the sky. Located near the western ferry pier, a short walk from the Noodle Shop, Kite Rock rises from a small knoll. Five distinct sport climbing routes beckon, each with its own personality. “One Flight Down” invites you to follow a shallow groove, while “Kestrel” presents a tricky start and technical climb. The arete of “Thundering Typhoon” offers a fierce challenge. For a less strenuous climb, “Sans Serif” allows for a variety of approaches. Finally, “Its All Right” guides climbers along the wall’s lip and around the arete, demanding two ropes to manage the rope drag. The bolts are aging, so climbers often treat these routes as highball boulder problems, padding the landing, or setting up top ropes for added safety. Kite Rock is more than just a rock. It’s a testament to the adventurous spirit, a place where climbers test their skills against the coarse volcanic rock, their reward, a panoramic view of Tung Lung Chau.
