Gazing upon Kitano Shrine, can you sense the echoes of a dream? Kitano Shrine, nestled in Tokyo’s Bunkyo ward, whispers a tale from the 12th century. A dream featuring Sugawara no Michizane, a revered scholar, appearing before Minamoto no Yoritomo. Michizane, seated upon an ox, foretold two fortunate events. These events miraculously unfolded the following year, prompting Yoritomo to build Kitano Shrine as a tribute to Tenjin. Kitano Shrine is a hidden gem, tucked away in the heart of Tokyo. It is not easily stumbled upon, adding to its mystique. The entrance, adorned with kanji characters, leads you up a steep stairway to the shrine’s plaza. The shrine grounds are intimate, yet full of charming details. Two ox statues, messengers of Tenjin, flank the main hall. An ox-shaped wooden panel awaits omikuji papers, tied to ward off misfortune. The ema votive plates display beautiful depictions of plum blossoms and oxen. During February and early March, Kitano Shrine bursts into vibrant color with blooming plum trees. The stairway is framed by pink and red plum blossoms. Weeping plum trees encircle the main hall. The Ume Matsuri festival celebrates this floral display. Visitors enjoy amazake, a sweet fermented rice drink, and traditional plum-infused desserts. Kitano Shrine offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. It is a place where dreams and history intertwine.
