Stepping onto the Seebacherplatz, you’re standing directly in front of a towering structure. This is Kirche Maria Lourdes, a place of worship, and much more than just a church. It stands as a testament to the Roman Catholic faith in a city that is largely Protestant.

The church’s intricate history began in 1893 when a nearby parish in Oerlikon was established as a branch of the St. Peter and Paul Church in Zurich’s Aussersihl district. The need for a new church in Seebach became apparent as the area experienced a population boom in the late 19th century. It was finally in 1933 that the cornerstone was laid, with the dedication ceremony two years later.

The church, designed by Zurich architect Fritz Metzger, is a modern masterpiece, its unique style echoing the Bauhausstil that was popular at the time. Metzger incorporated various religious symbols and elements, including a majestic statue of the Virgin Mary above the church’s entrance. It stands as a reminder of the pivotal role that Mary has played in Catholic belief. And if you look closely, you’ll notice that the statue’s gaze seems to rest on the nearby tramlines, adding a touch of whimsy to the religious iconography.

Inside the church, you’ll be captivated by the beautiful interior. The space is designed to bring people together, with the side naves creating a sense of unity and community among those who gather for worship. The stained-glass windows, designed by Ferdinand Gehr, are also worth noting. They depict the seven sacraments, adding a vibrant and ethereal element to the church’s interior. These, however, were added years later in 1959, while the church’s original interior was adorned with a fresco by Richard Seewald, depicting the Immaculata, the immaculate conception of Mary.

The church’s history is not without its practical side. In 1973, the church tower was renovated with a new plaster coating over the existing concrete structure. The church itself has seen multiple restorations over the years, enhancing its architectural grandeur and ensuring its preservation for future generations.

As you stand there, absorbing the atmosphere of faith and history, you’ll realize that Kirche Maria Lourdes is more than just a building. It’s a place where people from diverse backgrounds come together to find solace, connection, and spiritual renewal.
