Kirche Maria am Gestade

Hidden within Vienna’s bustling Innere Stadt district stands Kirche Maria am Gestade. This church whispers tales of ancient riverbanks and the echoes of sailors’ prayers. Kirche Maria am Gestade is one of Vienna’s oldest churches, alongside St. Peter’s Church and St. Rupert’s Church. Its name, “Mary at the Riverbank,” reveals its original location on the banks of an unregulated Danube arm. The church’s story begins in the 9th century with a humble wooden chapel built for sailors. This chapel housed a revered image of Mary, brought by the sailors themselves. The current structure, however, dates back to the 14th century, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. Kirche Maria am Gestade was built between 1394 and 1414. The church’s ownership has passed through many hands. From the Diocese of Passau to Viennese families, the church has seen a lot of history within its walls. The 56-meter-high tower, a masterpiece of Gothic openwork, stands as a beacon. This delicate structure, built between 1419 and 1428, has been a recognizable landmark throughout Vienna’s history. Imagine the sailors looking up at this tower as they navigated the Danube. Inside, the choir boasts stunning Gothic panels and fragments of medieval stained glass. A beautiful Annunciation from around 1360 graces the nave. This piece, attributed to the Meister der Minoritenwerkstatt, captures a pivotal moment in religious history. The church also houses the ornate Gothic Revival pulpit, installed during the 1820 renovations. The olive and gold colors and intricate details create a visual masterpiece. Kirche Maria am Gestade holds the relics of Saint Clemens Maria Hofbauer in a dedicated side altar. This saint, a significant figure in Viennese history, adds another layer of religious importance to this already historic church. The church narrowly escaped demolition in the early 19th century. Thanks to the advocacy of the Czech community, it was restored and reopened in 1812. Since 1820, the Redemptorist order has cared for the church. Today, Kirche Maria am Gestade stands as a testament to Vienna’s rich history. From its humble beginnings as a sailor’s chapel to its status as a protected historical site.
