Did the Christkönigskirche in Hochleiten always serve two faiths? No. The Kirche Hochleiten, also known as Christkönigskirche, has a unique history. Built between 1952 and 1954 alongside the “Jungarbeiterdorf Hochleiten,” Kirche Hochleiten was designed to be a shared space. Both Catholic and Protestant Christians use the church for worship. The groundbreaking ceremony for this special church took place on July 11, 1953. Just a month later, on August 9th, Cardinal Theodor Innitzer laid the cornerstone. He was joined by Monsignor Penahl, Technical Councilor Bruno Buchwieser, and Pastor Franz Jantsch from Hinterbrühl. The topping-out ceremony followed on December 15th of the same year, again graced by Cardinal Innitzer. The church was finally consecrated on May 27, 1954, by Cardinal Innitzer. The first Holy Mass was celebrated with Prelate Wagner and the Vienna Woods Boys’ Choir of St. Gabriel. Remarkably, the Protestant section of the Kirche Hochleiten was consecrated later that year, on November 7th. Today, you can attend Sunday service at Kirche Hochleiten from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. The church stands as a testament to cooperation and shared faith within the community of Gießhübl.
