Kirche Guthirt

Whispers of history echo around Kirche Guthirt. This magnificent church stands proudly in Zurich-Wipkingen. It has witnessed the changing tides of time since its construction in 1922-1923. Kirche Guthirt is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the resilience and faith of the community. Architect Anton Higi, who later became a city council member, designed this architectural marvel. Remarkably, Kirche Guthirt was completed in just a year and a half. This rapid construction was possible due to a city program designed to employ workers during a period of high unemployment. The church’s inauguration took place on October 7, 1923. Bishop Georg Schmid von Grüneck of Chur presided over the ceremony. Originally a daughter parish of Liebfrauenkirche, Kirche Guthirt gained its independence on November 11, 1933. Its own daughter parish, Heilig Geist, was later established in the neighboring Höngg. The church’s design is a striking blend of neo-baroque and classical elements. It mirrors the Josefskirche in the industrial district. Interestingly, Anton Higi, the architect of Kirche Guthirt, was also involved in the construction of St. Josef Church from 1912 to 1914. The imposing tower of Kirche Guthirt dominates the skyline. A grand staircase leads to the main portal. Above the entrance, a relief depicts Jesus as the Good Shepherd. This poignant artwork was created in 1930 by sculptor Alphons Friedrich Magg. The tower houses six bronze bells, cast by H. Rüetschi of Aarau on June 2, 1933, and consecrated by Bishop Laurenz Matthias Vincenz. Inside, the church features a longitudinal layout. Five identical bays comprise the nave, leading to a slightly recessed choir with a curved apse. Large arched windows bathe the interior in natural light. The stained glass, designed by Rudolf Mathys, depicts the symbols of the twelve apostles. The choir windows, designed by E. Schweri, portray St. Agnes and John the Baptist. Kirche Guthirt has undergone several renovations. One significant renovation in 1976-1977, led by architect Rudolf Mathys, resulted in the addition of classrooms beneath the church tower. The most recent renovation, completed between 2018 and 2019 by Schäublin Architekten, focused on preserving the historical integrity of the building. Kirche Guthirt stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and architectural brilliance in the heart of Zurich. It continues to serve as a spiritual haven for the community.
