“It’s peaceful always has a breeze stays cool and it feels safe so I can relax.” That’s what Donald says about Kirby Park. Kirby Park isn’t just a green space. It embodies community spirit and transformation.

Once plagued by illegal dumping and urban decay, Kirby Park has been reborn. It is now a vibrant place for all. The residents of the 1800 Block of Saratoga spearheaded this change. Block Captain Donald Quarles led the charge. They envisioned a space where neighbors could relax and connect with nature.

During the design process, the community shared their dreams for Kirby Park. They wanted a place for adults and children alike. They desired natural beauty and space to enjoy the outdoors. The result is a park that reflects these collective goals. Kirby Park now features a horseshoe pit. It is the most popular pastime of the block. There are also play structures and swing sets for children. A serenity garden provides a tranquil escape.

Large trees offer shade. A native bird garden attracts local wildlife. Bridget Cimino’s Serenity Mural adds a splash of color. It draws visitors in to admire the ambiance.

The transformation of Kirby Park began with neighborhood cleanups. Residents pruned bushes, installed natural fencing and created log seating. The community uses the tree canopy on hot days. They gather for conversations and cook-outs. Donald started a tradition of holding seasonal festivals in the park.

Now let’s travel back in time to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Here we find Fred Morgan Kirby. He was a five-and-dime merchant. In 1887, he opened his first store. Later, in 1912, he merged his business with Frank Woolworth’s. This merger brought 94 stores. Fred became a founder of the F.W. Woolworth Company.

In 1931, Fred Morgan Kirby endowed the F. M. Kirby Foundation. He funded it with about nine million dollars. His intention was to continue his legacy through generations. The Foundation initially supported hospitals, churches and schools. Fred was a strong supporter of Wilkes-Barre. He donated to build a health center in honor of his mother. He also provided funds for Kirby Park in the city center.

Fred served as president of the Foundation until 1940. His son, Allan P. Kirby, succeeded him. Allan was already established in business. In 1967, Fred M. Kirby II, Allan’s son, took over. He expanded the Foundation’s endowment and influence. After over 56 years of leadership, Fred M. Kirby II passed away in 2011. His son, S. Dillard Kirby, became President in 2010.

In 2015, the Kirby Alliance allocated funds to three Donor Advised Funds or Foundations. This reunited the Kirby family’s philanthropy efforts.

Today, the Foundation operates from the historic Sansay House in Morristown, New Jersey. The F. M. Kirby Foundation continues to support education, arts, human services and medical research. These areas remain central to the family’s philanthropic interests.

Kirby Park stands as a testament to the power of community. It’s a place where neighbors connect. It is a place where nature thrives. It’s a reminder that even the most neglected spaces can be transformed. All it takes is vision, dedication, and a little bit of community spirit.
