King George V School began its journey in 1894. It started as Kowloon British College. A small school in Tsim Sha Tsui it housed just 31 students and two teachers. A devastating typhoon destroyed the original building. The determined parents pushed for a new location.
In 1902 King George V School reopened as Kowloon British School. Sir Robert Ho Tung a generous Eurasian entrepreneur provided funds. He championed a diverse student body a vision that defines the school today. King George V School wasn’t just for British children. It welcomed students of all nationalities.
The school relocated again in 1936. Its new home in Ho Man Tin boasted Bauhaus architecture. The building was hailed as “the best in Asia”. Students fondly recall picnics on Hung Hom Beach. King George V School’s four houses were established during this era. Each house honors significant headmasters and teachers.
World War II brought unprecedented challenges. King George V School served as a refugee camp. Later the Japanese military occupied the school using it as a hospital. After the war the school reopened. Remarkably its buildings survived better than most in Hong Kong. A Royal Air Force doctor even inscribed a Winston Churchill quote above the hall entrance.
In 1948 King George V School officially adopted its current name. It fully embraced its diverse student population. The school motto “Honestas Ante Honores” “Honesty before Glory” became a powerful symbol of the school’s values.
