Remember that time capsule? It’s hidden behind a plaque at Killarney Secondary School’s entrance. It will be opened in 2071.
Killarney Secondary School isn’t just a school. It’s a living history book. It opened on September 29 1957. The first students were in grades 7 to 10. Principal Tom Alsbury led 52 teachers. Grade 11 joined the next year. Grade 12 followed soon after. The first graduating class was in 1960.
The school started surrounded by empty land. The area south of 49th Avenue slowly grew around it. A new wing with an auditorium was added in 1961. Another wing improved the science labs in 1967. By the 1970s over 1700 students needed space. Seven portable classrooms were added. Enrollment reached 2000 students. It has stayed around that number ever since. A new wing C-Wing with a new entrance classrooms and a music lab came in 2003.
Killarney is known for its huge Fine Arts program. It has a famous music program. The Killarney Secondary Band Choir and Strings have performed internationally. The Killarney Association for Film and Theater KAFT promotes drama.
Killarney’s academic achievements are impressive too. For thirteen years 1991 to 2003 it ranked in the top third of BC secondary schools in math and science. It even reached 5th place out of 23 schools in 2005.
Killarney has produced many notable alumni. Avan Jogia a famous actor attended. So did Colin Mochrie the improv comedian. Professional hockey player Milan Lucic is also an alum.
That time capsule holds memories. It represents Killarney’s rich past. It’s a testament to the school’s enduring spirit. It’s a legacy waiting to be uncovered. Think of the stories it will tell in 2071. What will Killarney Secondary School look like then?
