What was once a small village on the outskirts of Vienna is now a charming neighborhood full of history and charm. KG Neustift am Walde, nestled in the heart of Döbling, invites you to step back in time as we uncover its secrets.

The story of KG Neustift am Walde begins in the 14th century. The name itself, meaning “new foundation by the woods,” hints at its origins as a replacement for the abandoned village of Chlainzing. In 1414, KG Neustift am Walde was given to the Saint Dorothea’s Monastery, marking an era of growth and prosperity for the small village.

Life in KG Neustift am Walde wasn’t always easy. The village endured the hardships of war, particularly during the Turkish sieges of Vienna. But through it all, the resilient spirit of its people prevailed. In the 18th century, a devastating period of poor wine harvests left the villagers struggling. They appealed to Empress Maria Theresa for tax relief, presenting her with a crown woven from vine branches. The Empress, moved by their plight, granted their request and returned the crown. She instructed them to hold an annual festival in honor of Saint Roch, the patron saint of protection against plague and illness.

This act of kindness is still celebrated today with the Neustifter Kirtag, a lively festival held every August. This tradition speaks volumes about the enduring connection between KG Neustift am Walde’s past and present. Today, KG Neustift am Walde is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists, drawn to its quaint Heurige (wine taverns) and tranquil atmosphere. As you stroll through the streets lined with charming houses and vineyards, imagine the echoes of laughter and music that filled the air during the Neustifter Kirtag. KG Neustift am Walde stands as a testament to the enduring power of community and tradition, a place where history whispers through the leaves and the spirit of Vienna comes alive.
