Picture this. You are standing before KG Kaiserebersdorf Herrschaft in Vienna. A sprawling area. It’s much more than just a name on a map.
Kaiserebersdorf Herrschaft. It’s a piece of Vienna’s rich history. It was once an independent community. Then it became part of the larger Simmering district in 1892. A small part even stretches into the Favoriten district. Imagine the changes this area has witnessed.
This land. It has a long story. Archaeological digs in the 1970s uncovered traces of settlements from the Urnfield culture. That’s way back in the Bronze Age. But the written record begins much later. Ebersdorf first appears in official documents in 1108. A castle stood here since at least the 13th century. The Ebersdorf family owned it. They served as the highest chamberlains in Austria for a long time.
Then came a significant shift. Emperor Maximilian I acquired the castle in 1499. He transformed it into a grand hunting lodge and pleasure palace. He loved the area’s rich wildlife. He really appreciated the abundant Donauauen. Kaiserebersdorf was born. The name changed to reflect this imperial connection.
Tragedy struck during the Second Turkish Siege in 1683. Both the village and the castle were destroyed. Later Maria Theresa had it rebuilt. She dedicated the reconstructed castle to the care of the poor. It later served as a barracks. Napoleon’s troops devastated Kaiserebersdorf in 1809. His close friend Marshal Jean Lannes. He died at the Mühlbergerhof brewery. He succumbed to wounds suffered during the Battle of Aspern. Napoleon himself visited Lannes thrice.
Industrialization in the 19th century passed Kaiserebersdorf by. In 1883 it only had about 2500 residents. Its rural character persisted well into the 1960s. The construction of housing. Schools and shopping centers eventually changed that.
Schloss Kaiserebersdorf has seen many uses. It was a barracks. It was a factory. Around 1924 it even functioned as a juvenile correctional facility. Today it houses the Justizanstalt Wien Simmering. This is an adult correctional facility. Since 1998 it has two wings. One wing is in the historical castle building. It houses inmates with relaxed sentences. The other is a newer building with six sections for pre-trial detention and imprisonment.
