Have you ever wondered about the origins of a place name? KG Fünfhaus is the name of a specific area of Vienna, part of the 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. The name itself has quite a history. It was coined long ago, in the 18th century, after the nearby Barnabitenkollegium St. Michael monastery. It was translated to mean ‘Five Houses’ or ‘Five Buildings’, which could be seen as a humble beginning. The reason for the name was that the community of Fünfhaus was originally made up of five individual houses, each with its own unique character. It wasn’t until the 19th century, with the arrival of the Western Railway and the Westbahnhof, that the area started to grow. Today, the area is home to a diverse community and is a vibrant part of Vienna. You can still discern its past. You’ll find traditional buildings interspersed with modern structures. A testament to its historical evolution. One thing remains constant: the spirit of Vienna shines through in the community’s warm embrace.
