Hidden within Vienna’s 22nd district, Donaustadt, lies KG Breitenlee. It’s a place whispering tales of resilience, rebirth, and a touch of imperial drama. KG Breitenlee first appeared in records around 1160 as “Preitenle”. A protective letter from Duke Leopold VI placed the village under the care of Schottenstift Abbey in 1200. By 1258, KG Breitenlee boasted 28 farms, sharing tithes with the Bishop of Passau, Schottenstift, St. Dorothea’s Monastery, and the regional ruler. Tragedy struck in 1529. During the first Turkish siege of Vienna, every inhabitant of KG Breitenlee was killed. The village lay deserted for over a century, a stark reminder of the era’s turmoil. Hope returned in 1694. Abbot Sebastian Faber of Schottenstift spearheaded KG Breitenlee’s revival. The village was meticulously redesigned, its farms oriented to the cardinal directions, a hallmark of Baroque planning. At the heart of this rebirth stood the Schottenstift estate, completed in 1698. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Anne, was consecrated in 1699. Uniquely among Marchfeld churches, it features 10-meter-high towers, a testament to its renewed importance. KG Breitenlee’s story even brushes against the grand sweep of European history. During the Battle of Aspern-Essling in 1809, the Austrian grenadier reserves were stationed near KG Breitenlee. Their intervention under Archduke Charles proved decisive against Napoleon’s forces. KG Breitenlee’s location played a crucial role in its development. Initially part of Lower Austria, portions of KG Breitenlee were incorporated into Vienna’s 21st district, Floridsdorf, in 1905. The rest joined in 1938 when it became part of Greater Vienna under Nazi rule, forming the 22nd district, Gross-Enzersdorf. After World War II, district boundaries shifted again, and KG Breitenlee found its current home within Donaustadt. Today, KG Breitenlee stands as a testament to its enduring spirit. It has evolved from a medieval village to a modern Stadtteil, carrying its unique history within Vienna’s urban tapestry.
