Gazing upon this tranquil hillside, can you sense the echoes of Kersch’s ancient past? Kersch, nestled in the heart of the Südeifel region, whispers tales of Roman and Frankish settlers. Their presence, though long gone, is etched into the very soil beneath our feet. Kersch first emerged from the mists of time in a document dated October 28, 895. The document, a confirmation of the Echternach Abbey’s holdings by King Zwentibold, referred to Kersch as “Carescara”. Imagine the world then, so different, yet connected to us through this very place. Kersch was part of the Electorate of Trier until the late 18th century, under the jurisdiction of the Welschbillig office. The French Revolution swept through, and in 1798, Kersch became part of the French canton of Pfalzel in the Saar Department. Then, in 1815, the Congress of Vienna reassigned the region to the Kingdom of Prussia. Kersch became part of the Trier district, a shift that marked a new chapter in its long story. After enduring both World Wars and the complexities of the 20th century, Kersch eventually became part of the municipality of Ralingen in 1974. Yet, it retains its unique identity as an Ortsbezirk, a district with its own council and representative. Kersch isn’t just a place of historical significance. It’s also home to the St. Antonius Catholic Church, a Romanesque hall church dating back to the 12th century. The church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition in this quiet corner of Germany. Kersch’s story continues to unfold, woven into the fabric of the Ralingen municipality. It’s a story of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring spirit of a small village with a rich past.
