Was Kępa Latoszkowa always a peaceful neighborhood? Today, as we stand here in Kępa Latoszkowa, a quiet residential area in Warsaw’s Wilanów district, you might be surprised to learn about its tumultuous past. Kępa Latoszkowa, originally a humble settlement established in 1831, became part of Warsaw in 1951. But its story takes a dark turn during World War II. In 1943, the Polish resistance carried out a daring operation here, known as “Akcja Wilanów”. This operation targeted German settlers residing in Kępa Latoszkowa. The resistance, seeking to disrupt the Nazi occupation, burned down four houses and tragically killed twelve individuals associated with anti-Polish activities. Among the casualties were three members of the hated “granatowa policja” – a Polish police force collaborating with the Nazis – and associates of August Friedrich Boraun, the Nazi Party leader within the settlement. The event serves as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war and the sacrifices made in the fight for freedom. It’s a sobering chapter in the history of Kępa Latoszkowa, a place that today stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of Warsaw.
