Gazing across the tranquil waters, Kei Yit Wan reveals its secrets. Kei Yit Wan, once known as “Winnow Basket Bay,” aptly describes its past shape. This name, found in Ming Dynasty texts, refers to the bay now called Aldrich Bay. Kei Yit Wan, nestled on Hong Kong Island, is bordered by Chai Wan, Mount Parker, Sai Wan Ho, and Victoria Harbour. In the 18th century, Kei Yit Wan became a haven for fishermen seeking refuge from storms. Hakka people also settled here, working in the quarries and building homes along the shore. By 1841, Kei Yit Wan housed about 1,200 people, mostly living on boats. Piracy plagued the area in 1860, prompting Governor Richard Macdonnell to revitalize Kei Yit Wan. He implemented new roads, housing, and police posts to combat crime. By 1911, the population had grown to almost 6,000. The 1920s saw the rise of light industries in Kei Yit Wan. After World War II, Kei Yit Wan transformed into a bustling fish-trading market. Mainland Chinese refugees also sought shelter in Kei Yit Wan. They constructed mountain villages, many of which became slums. A devastating fire in 1975 destroyed many of these homes. The government subsequently built public housing. Modern Kei Yit Wan is a dense residential area. Its coastline has dramatically changed since the 19th century. Today, visitors can explore remnants of the past. The A Kung Ngam Shipyards and the Shau Kei Wan Wholesale Fish Market offer glimpses into Kei Yit Wan’s seafaring heritage. The Eastern District Tourist Trail winds through the area, passing temples dedicated to various deities like Shing Wong, Tin Hau, Tam Kung, and Yuk Wong.
