“A century of stories echo within these walls,” I murmur, gesturing towards Kearney Funeral Services. Kearney Funeral Services has been a cornerstone of the Vancouver community since 1908. It began with Thomas James Kearney, a Klondike Gold Rush entrepreneur who fell in love with Vancouver and a young opera singer named Catherine O’Connor. Catherine assisted her mother in preparing the deceased, sparking an idea for Tom. He saw an opportunity to get closer to Catherine and entered the funeral business, eventually buying out Green Simon & Lamp Co. and establishing Kearney Funeral Services. In 1911, Kearney made history by ordering Canada’s first motorized ambulances, a pair of Pierce Arrows. He married Catherine in 1915, and they had three children. Tragedy struck in the 1930s as the family lost their business properties. However, Tom’s son, Frank, stepped up to rebuild. His sister Ellen became one of the first licensed female funeral directors in California. After Thomas’s passing in 1942, the Kearneys persevered, purchasing a property on Hudson Street in 1944 and later regaining a location on Broadway. Frank’s sudden death in 1975 left his sister Ellen and her sons to carry the torch. They repurchased Columbia Chapel and S. Bowell and Sons, expanding Kearney’s reach. Today, Kearney Funeral Services operates from multiple locations across the Lower Mainland, with the fourth generation of the Kearney family continuing the tradition of compassionate care. They offer a wide range of services, from traditional burials to cremations and personalized celebrations of life. Their commitment to honoring the unique lives of those lost resonates within these walls. They are a testament to the enduring power of family, legacy, and service in the heart of Vancouver.
