Kayadera whispers tales of resilience. It stands near the Kuramae station in Tokyo. It’s a small Buddhist temple. But it holds centuries of history within its walls. Kayadera’s story begins with a thousand-year-old Kaya tree. This magnificent tree stood near the Sumida River. A small hermitage once nestled beneath its branches. One day, a mountain priest arrived. He challenged the hermit to a cutting contest. The hermit accepted. The mountain priest lost. He dedicated the Kaya tree to the Buddhist deity Kannon. He pledged to protect Kayadera from fire. This legend foretold Kayadera’s enduring spirit. Kayadera has faced numerous fires throughout its history. Yet, it has always been rebuilt. Today, the original Kaya tree is gone. But its spirit lives on in the temple. Kayadera houses a statue of Kannon. It also contains the grave of a renowned scholar and poet, Ishikawa Masamochi. The temple grounds feature a serene garden. You’ll also find interesting statues throughout, from cute and cheery to serene and dignified. Look for the woodblock print of Kayadera by the famous ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. Kayadera is more than just a temple. It is a symbol of endurance. It is a testament to the power of faith. Come and experience the quiet charm of Kayadera. Discover the stories it has to tell.
