Born in England, Kay Meek spent most of her life in West Vancouver. She supported many local attractions. These included the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Harmony Arts Festival. But her most significant contribution was to this very centre.
In 1998, Kay Meek donated one million dollars. This was for the creation of an arts centre. The West Vancouver School District proposed a location. It would be next to West Vancouver Secondary School. Construction began. Kay Meek often said the theatre’s construction kept her going. Sadly, she passed away shortly after its opening in 2004 at the age of 98. The Kay Meek Arts Centre stands as a lasting tribute to her generosity and vision.
The Grosvenor Theatre is the main performance space within the Kay Meek Centre. It is a traditional proscenium stage. It features a high-arching ceiling. The theatre can seat about 500 people. It hosts concerts, plays, dance performances and award ceremonies. West Vancouver Secondary School students use it regularly. They perform with their bands and in drama classes.
But the Kay Meek Centre is not just for the school. It’s open to the public. It hosts a wide range of events. You might see Lunar New Year celebrations. You might see the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra sometimes performs here.
In 2017, the Kay Meek Arts Centre underwent major upgrades. A capital campaign raised four million dollars. The upgrades improved accessibility. A commercial elevator now provides access to all three levels. Other improvements included state-of-the-art sound and lighting. There is also a purpose-built dance studio. New seating was added in the McEwen Theatre.
The Kay Meek Arts Centre continues to thrive. It presents world-class artists. Performances range from classical concerts to jazz and blues. Theatre and other art forms are presented here as well.
