Craving an escape from the city’s constant hum? Today, we explore Kau To Shan. This mountain, also known as Cove Hill, rises 399 metres above Sha Tin.

Kau To Shan offers a unique blend of natural beauty and residential charm. Its name in Chinese is “狗肚山”. That translates to Dog’s Stomach Mountain.

Let’s journey back to the 1970s. The sands beneath Kau To Shan helped build the Sha Tin Racecourse. Imagine the bustling activity as earth movers reshaped the landscape. Today, that rugged terrain has transformed. It is now an upmarket residential area.

Kau To Shan remains somewhat hidden. This makes it less crowded than other Hong Kong hikes. From Shatin East Rail Station, a short minibus ride takes you to the trailhead. Keep an eye out for minibus 66K.

The hike up Kau To Shan can be a little confusing. But the views are worth the effort. As you ascend, you’ll be surrounded by dense bushes and forest. Ribbons mark the way thanks to previous hikers.

Reaching the pillar at the summit feels like a true accomplishment. From here, Tolo Harbour stretches out before you. Ma On Shan rises in the distance. On a clear day, you might even glimpse Shenzhen.

The downhill trail can be steep and slippery. So watch your footing. Eventually, the path transitions to concrete at the Tai Po Kau Forest Track.

The trails offer a mix of terrains. There are dirt paths to concrete roads. Be sure to pay attention. The paths are well marked.

Lai Ping Road is emerging as a prime residential location of Kau To Shan. Over the past few years, new developments have sprung up along this road. These newbuilds feature diverse layouts and floor plans including apartments and houses.

Imagine living here. The charm of Kau To Shan lies in its picturesque location. Rolling hills and proximity to Tolo Harbour create a desirable living environment.

Kau To Shan offers a rewarding experience. It combines a challenging hike with stunning views. It is a reminder of Hong Kong’s natural beauty.
