Once a quiet haven for Hakka farmers, Kau Sai Chau now echoes with the crisp thwack of golf clubs. Kau Sai Chau, the sixth largest island of Hong Kong, has undergone a dramatic transformation. In 1952, the Hakka farmers and shopkeepers of Kau Sai Chau were relocated. The island became a military firing range, silencing the everyday sounds of village life. But the island was destined for something more. In 1995, the northern half of Kau Sai Chau was transformed into the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, the only public course in Hong Kong. This sprawling complex boasts three 18-hole courses, designed by golfing legends like Gary Player and Nelson & Haworth. Imagine teeing off surrounded by the stunning scenery of the South China Sea and the Sai Kung Peninsula. While the fairways are meticulously manicured, Kau Sai Chau retains a touch of its wild past. Wild boars roam the island, sometimes venturing onto the greens, a reminder of the island’s natural heritage. Kau Sai Chau isn’t just about golf. The island holds remnants of an even older history. A prehistoric rock carving, discovered in 1976, hints at early inhabitants. The Hung Shing Temple, a declared monument of Hong Kong, stands near the small Kau Sai Fishermen Village at the southern tip of the island. This beautifully restored temple, built before 1889, is a testament to the island’s cultural significance. During the Hung Shing Festival, the temple comes alive with Cantonese opera performances and the vibrant energy of the Jiao Festival. So, Kau Sai Chau is a fascinating blend of old and new. It’s a place where the echoes of ancient traditions meet the modern swing of a golf club. A place where wild boars still roam, and a prehistoric rock carving whispers stories of the past.
