Razor-sharp rugged peaks characterize Kau Nga Ling. This place is also known as Dog Teeth Ridge. It is one of Hong Kong’s most demanding and dangerous hiking spots. Kau Nga Ling presents a challenge even for experienced hikers.
Kau Nga Ling sits on Lantau Island. It is a series of precipitous mountains. The highest point is 539 meters above sea level. This makes it a prominent feature of the island’s landscape. It’s inside Lantau South Country Park. The park was created in 1978.
The name Dog Teeth Ridge comes from the mountains’ appearance. When viewed from above they resemble a dog’s teeth. This striking visual has given Kau Nga Ling its distinctive name.
Geologically, Kau Nga Ling is made of volcanic rocks. These rocks form many of Hong Kong’s highest mountains. Tai Mo Shan and Lantau Peak are also volcanic. This contrasts with the granite rocks found in Kowloon’s mountains.

One popular route goes up Middle Dog’s Teeth. It then descends East Dog’s Teeth. This path ends at Shui Hau Village. Some hikers continue to Lantau Peak. Others end at Ngong Ping Village for an easier descent. The Middle and East route takes about six hours. The total elevation gain is 539 meters.
The trails are steep. Sometimes the gaps between rocks are wide. The downhill slope of scree can be slippery. Loose gravel makes walking difficult. Some hikers sit and go down on all fours.
