Whispers of faith echo within the Katholische Kirche Heilig Kreuz. This sanctuary, nestled in Zurich’s Altstetten quarter, has witnessed a century of devotion and change. The Katholische Kirche Heilig Kreuz traces its origins back to 1900. It began as a modest structure, built by local craftsmen without an architect. This first church served a sprawling parish, encompassing not only Altstetten but also surrounding villages. Over time, these villages established their own parishes, leaving the Katholische Kirche Heilig Kreuz to focus on the growing community of Altstetten. The first church stood as a testament to the late classical style, a simple hall crowned by a roof rider with two bells. As Altstetten flourished, so did the congregation of the Katholische Kirche Heilig Kreuz. By the 1970s, the original building could no longer accommodate the burgeoning community. A new era dawned with the construction of the current church, designed by architect Dezső Ercsi between 1977 and 1979. During the transition, a temporary church, the Tituskirche, served the faithful. This “Fastenopferkirche,” or Lenten offering church, stood as a symbol of continuity amidst change. The contemporary Katholische Kirche Heilig Kreuz stands as an architectural marvel, a concrete ark with bold supporting pillars. Vertical grooves etched into the concrete and copper roof draw the eye upwards, while a prominent wall bisects the structure, emphasizing a horizontal flow. Light pours in through a large, central skylight, illuminating the sanctuary within. Inside, the artistic legacy of Albert Wider comes to life. His bronze sculptures, including the main and side altars, and the intricate door handles, adorn the space. Willy Charles Erismann’s enamel works, the “Heavenly Jerusalem” behind the altar and the baptismal sculpture, add a vibrant touch. The Katholische Kirche Heilig Kreuz is more than just a building; it’s a living testament to faith.
