Brace yourself for a journey back in time. Right here stands Kat Hing Wai. This Punti walled village whispers tales of resilience and heritage. Kat Hing Wai is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of the Tang Clan, one of Hong Kong’s “Five Great Clans”.

Imagine life here centuries ago. The Tangs, descendants of Southern China, settled here during the Song dynasty. But it was in the 17th century, that the village took its present form. Walls rose, transforming Kat Hing Wai into a fortress.

These walls, now Grade I listed historic buildings, weren’t built for show. They were a necessity. Pirates and rival clans threatened these lands. The walls of Kat Hing Wai offered protection. They shielded residents from bandits and even wild tigers.

Picture this. During the Qing dynasty, the Tangs added five-metre high blue brick walls and cannon towers. These additions bolstered defenses. Kat Hing Wai became a formidable family stronghold.

Now, focus on the entrance. Notice anything peculiar? The iron gates have a story of their own. In 1899, the British Empire clashed with local clans. The Tang Clan resisted the British takeover. They fortified themselves within Kat Hing Wai. Ultimately, the British prevailed. They seized the iron gates.

These gates became a symbol of British victory. They were shipped to London. But the Tang Clan never forgot. They petitioned for their return. In 1925, Sir Edward Stubbs returned one gate. The villagers celebrated its homecoming. As a reminder, a tablet recounts this incident.

Interestingly, the gates you see now are not a matching pair. The left gate originally belonged to Tai Hong Wai. It was gifted to Kat Hing Wai when the right gate returned. A symbol of friendship and resilience.

Kat Hing Wai is a quasi-rectangular shape. Its walls stretch seven meters high. They enclose an area of about eighty meters square. Once, a moat surrounded these walls. Today, only remnants remain.

Step inside Kat Hing Wai. Most houses have been rebuilt in recent years. Yet, the village retains its historical charm. It is a living testament to the Tang Clan’s legacy.

Today, around 400 Tang descendants call Kat Hing Wai home. They speak the Weitou dialect, a Yue dialect. As you wander, remember that Kat Hing Wai is private property.

Kat Hing Wai stands as a symbol of cultural identity. It is a reminder of Hong Kong’s rich past. Kat Hing Wai is a place where history lives and breathes. Take a moment to appreciate the stories etched into these walls.
