Here stands Kasei-chan Monument, a charming landmark in Nakano. What makes this monument so special? It is more than just a statue. It is a symbol of local pride and artistic expression.

Kasei-chan is the beloved mascot character of Toritsu-Kasei. The monument was designed by the talented manga artist Tetsuya Chiba. The round-faced Kasei-chan with its bulging legs greets visitors. It stands proudly in front of the south exit of Toritsu-Kasei Station.

This character has received tremendous support from locals. The monument was installed by young members of the shopping district in February 2014. In 2014, it was officially recognized as a Nakano Ward designated tourist resource.

Nakano is located in the western part of Tokyo’s 23 wards. It is known as the “holy land” of subculture. Nakano offers historic shrines, temples and gourmet food. The town is bustling with old-fashioned shopping streets. This makes Nakano a diverse city with a population of about 17,000 people from about 120 countries.

The Kasei-chan Monument marks the starting point for another adventure. It is the Kasei-chan Seven Lucky Gods tour. These seven gods are scattered around the shopping arcade. Each one brings a unique blessing. Maps are available to guide you.

First, find the golden statue of Ebisu at Patisserie Fujinoki. Ebisu brings prosperity in business. Next, locate Jurojin diagonally in front of Kasei Park. Jurojin grants longevity. Bishamonten is on the south side of the shopping street. Bishamonten brings good luck in competitions.

Daikokuten is near the entrance of Saginomiya High School. Daikokuten brings good fortune and wealth. Find Benzaiten across the railroad crossing. Benzaiten brings academic success and improvement in the arts. Fukurokuju is in a corner of Wakamiya Clinic. Fukurokuju brings happiness, wealth, and longevity. The last statue, Hoteison, is on the north side of the shopping street. Hoteison brings good health and freedom from illness.

Exploring for the Kasei-chan Seven Lucky Gods offers leisurely breaks. Try the “Kasei Chan de Choux” from Patisserie Fujinoki. The crispy cookie dough and custard cream are satisfying.

Interestingly, only Ebisu originates from Japan. The other gods come from overseas. They represent Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Shintoism. This shows the diversity of Nakano.

Kasei-chan is more than just a mascot. It is a symbol of Nakano’s unique character. The monument and the Seven Lucky Gods tour embody community spirit. They reflect artistic expression and cultural diversity. So, take a moment to appreciate Kasei-chan. It represents the heart of Toritsu-Kasei.
