Karrtorpsparken wasn’t always a park. It’s part of Gransberget an area marking the old boundary between Botkyrka and Nacka parishes. The area was designated as parkland in a 1948 city plan. It was intended as a green buffer between the older Enskededalen settlements and the planned Karrtorp district. The park also preserved the Karrtorp cottage. This gave the surrounding district its name.
In 2009 Stockholm’s municipal council renamed the central part of Gransberget to Karrtorpsparken. The northern section became Faholmaskogen. Faholma was the old name for a bog and forest area. The southern part of Gransberget kept its original name.
Karrtorpsparken stretches about 160 meters north from Karrtorpsvagen. The southern part retains parts of Karrtorp’s historic buildings. The northern part has a playground. It includes climbing equipment a balance beam a slide a boules court a pergola and seating. There are open grassy areas for picnics and ball games. It’s a vibrant space for families and community members.
Karrtorpsparken’s history is intertwined with the development of Karrtorp itself. The planned expansion of the area initially envisioned a larger central area in nearby Bagarmossen. This never materialized. However the initial plans for Karrtorp also included schools and community centers. Hjalmar Klemming the chief architect of Svenska Bostader played a pivotal role in shaping Karrtorp’s layout. His design incorporated long interconnected buildings maximizing green spaces for recreation.
