Have you ever wondered about the secrets held within these walls? This is Karrtorps Gymnasium. A place where generations of students have learned grown and dreamed.
Karrtorps Gymnasium isn’t just a school. It’s a significant part of Karrtorp’s history. Designed by the architect Kjell Odeén it opened in 1956. The building’s distinctive design is a prime example of post-war functionalism. The Stockholm City Museum recognizes its historical and cultural value.
The main building is striking. It has four floors. Seven wings extend from a central structure. Each wing had its own purpose. Classrooms offices a music hall an assembly hall. There was even a kitchen and a caretaker’s apartment. The buildings are predominantly smooth plastered and painted in light colors.
Extensive renovations took place in the late 1990s. The school’s gymnasium Karrtorpshallen was added in 1963. It’s located on the south side of the schoolyard. Also designed by Kjell Odeén this impressive addition enhanced the school’s athletic facilities.
Initially called Forsöksgymnasiet i Karrtorp and later Karrtorps läroverk it became Karrtorps Gymnasium in 1967. The school offered its first student exams between 1959 and 1968. Municipal adult education was available there from 1992-1998. In 2019-2020 it housed around 400 students and 59 staff members. In 2018 Lunaskolan Södra a private school moved into building B.
Beyond academics Karrtorps Gymnasium has played a role in Swedish culture. It served as Beckaskolan in the 1995 film Bert. Parts of the 2007 Christmas calendar En riktig jul were also filmed here. Students from Järla school’s music classes participated in the filming.
