Why is carnival celebrated? That’s the question the Kölner Karnevalsmuseum answers. It’s the largest carnival museum in Germany. Here at the Kölner Karnevalsmuseum, we delve into the heart of Cologne’s “fifth season”.

The Kölner Karnevalsmuseum is divided into two sections. One explores the history of carnival. The other is an adventure area.

Think of “Kölle Alaaf!” This battle cry echoes through the city during carnival. The Kölner Karnevalsmuseum holds many exhibits. Each tells its own unique story. Multimedia displays offer background information. They answer visitor questions about carnival.

The Kölner Karnevalsmuseum uses sounds and images. Objects show the exciting carnival atmosphere. You’ll see celebrations, colours, and joyful spirit. The museum explores carnival’s history throughout the centuries in Europe.

Carnival’s roots are in medieval times. People celebrated to expel winter. They welcomed the Easter fasting period. “Karneval” comes from the Latin “carne vale”. This means “meat farewell”.

By 1341, the festival became excessive. The city council stopped funding the “Mummerei” celebrations. Locals continued the party in the streets.

Inspired by Venetian masquerade balls, Cologne’s high society held costume balls in the 18th century. The French halted street carnival festivities. The Prussians revived the tradition later.

The Cologne Carnival Committee formed in 1823. It structured the carnival with ground rules. The ‘Held Karneval’, today’s ‘Prinz Karneval’, became the festival’s figurehead. He led the first Rose Monday parade.

Wars and economic crises cancelled the Rose Monday parade. Cologne always brought back the festivities. In 1991, protesters marched against the Gulf War. They demanded confectionary instead of bombs.

Groups and music ensembles shaped today’s events. Carnival sessions filled venues. Music acts and satirists performed. Willi Ostermann’s songs made Cologne Carnival famous.

Today, Cologne has many carnival bands. Black Föös and Höhner are examples. Around 150 carnival clubs host events. These include sessions, parades, and costume balls. The season starts November 11 and ends on Ash Wednesday.

Every year, millions flock to Cologne. They dress up in costumes for five days. They sing, dance, and drink. The Kölner Karnevalsmuseum preserves and presents this vibrant history. So step inside and immerse yourself in the spirit of Cologne Carnival. Discover the traditions. Experience the joy. The Kölner Karnevalsmuseum is the perfect place to start your carnival adventure.
