Hidden among the leafy streets of Setagaya ward lies Karasuyama Teramachi. This is not just any neighborhood. It’s a temple town.

Karasuyama Teramachi’s story begins with the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. This devastating earthquake damaged many temples in central Tokyo. Many relocated to Karasuyama. The relatively flat land and good natural environment made it an ideal location. The result is a unique concentration of temples. This peaceful area offers a serene contrast to the bustling city center.

More than twenty temples now call Karasuyama Teramachi home. Each has its own history. Some temples moved here after suffering damage in World War II. One temple. Tamon-in. holds a moving three-meter-high grave. It enshrines 568 unknown victims of the Tenmei famine. Another temple. Myoko-ji. keeps the grave of the Mizuno family. They were the lords of the Yamagata domain. Several famous artists are also buried there. These include Japanese-style painters Hayami Gyoshu Imamura Shiko and Komura Settai. Lacquer artist Kawanobe Iccho is also among them.

The temples of Karasuyama Teramachi aren’t just historical sites. They are also living communities. Many offer free maps and even free rides to visitors. Okubo Sekizai provides this service. They also share videos of temple tours. This all adds to the unique charm of Karasuyama Teramachi.

The cemeteries are well maintained. They are also on flat land. This makes them easily accessible for all visitors. Each season offers something special. In spring azaleas bloom in nearby parks. The lush greenery provides a beautiful setting. Autumn leaves add fiery colors to the scene. Winter offers a quiet serenity. Karasuyama Teramachi welcomes you to experience its beauty.
