Whispers of resilience echo around Kaplička in Karlín, Prague. This unassuming chapel, tucked away in Pernerova, holds a story more dramatic than its simple exterior suggests. Kaplička, meaning “chapel” in Czech, began its life in 1753 as a late Baroque sanctuary at the foot of Vítkov Hill. It served as a place of solace in a newly established cemetery for soldiers and invalids. Imagine the ornate facade, the roof turret with its chamfered corners, and the low dome reaching towards the sky. Inside, frescoes adorned the walls, depicting Czech patron saints and the coronation of the Virgin Mary. Kaplička witnessed a changing world as the 19th century dawned. The military cemetery was abolished, and the march of industry began to encroach upon its peaceful grounds. Factories rose around the chapel, and over time, Kaplička suffered indignities. Extensions marred its original form, and it was even repurposed as a regulatory station. But the greatest challenge was yet to come. In 2002, the Vltava River surged, unleashing a devastating flood upon Prague. Kaplička was submerged beneath four meters of water, a testament to nature’s raw power. The damage was extensive, threatening to erase this historical gem. Yet, from the depths of despair, a spirit of restoration emerged. A collaboration between the Karlín Group, Prague City Hall, the Ministry of Culture, and Prague 8 breathed new life into Kaplička. The meticulous restoration work brought the chapel back from the brink. Today, Kaplička stands as a symbol of resilience, its story etched into the very stones. The surrounding park, developed by AFI as part of the adjacent Butterfly project, offers a tranquil space to reflect on the chapel’s journey. Kaplička in Karlín, a testament to the enduring power of history and community.
