A three-meter-wide rose window. It depicts the Descent of the Holy Spirit. This is the Kaplica pw Zesłania Ducha Świętego in Warsaw. It’s not just any chapel. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and artistic skill.
The Kaplica pw Zesłania Ducha Świętego wasn’t built overnight. Its story began in 1983. Father Antoni Piaścik tirelessly sought land for a new church. He finally secured a plot near Park Olszyna. The community rallied. They erected a temporary chapel in just one day. Imagine the sheer determination! The local residents weren’t initially thrilled. They vehemently opposed the construction. The church however persevered.
Despite initial setbacks the first mass was celebrated on September 18 1983. Bishop Jerzy Modzelewski consecrated the site. The chapel was eventually built and consecrated. It wasn’t until September 1984 that the parish of Zesłania Ducha Świętego was officially established.
The architect Stanisław Sołtyk designed the Kaplica pw Zesłania Ducha Świętego. The renowned religious sculptor Jerzy Machaj created its stunning interior. He’s famous for his crucifixes. Over 200 copies of his work grace churches across the country. His students Andrzej Berner and Janusz Borkowski completed some of the work after his death. They carefully followed his original vision.
Look closer. Notice the inscriptions. On the tabernacle door a Gothic inscription reads: “Let your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth this earth.” This is a quote from Pope John Paul II’s 1979 Christmas Eve mass in Warsaw. The altar also bears a Latin inscription. It translates to: “Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love”.
The side chapel is also a masterpiece designed by Jerzy Machaj. It showcases a painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Surrounding the image are the Mysteries of the Rosary. A hidden tabernacle is located near one of them. Another houses a place for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Two stained-glass windows add to its beauty. One is dedicated to Pope John Paul II. The other honors Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. These windows along with the magnificent rose window beautifully illuminate the interior.
