As you stand here, in front of this unassuming little building, you might not immediately grasp its historical significance. This is the kaplica pw. Opatrzności Bożej. It’s not a grand cathedral or a lavish palace, but within its simple walls lies a story of faith, perseverance, and defiance, a testament to the enduring spirit of a community longing for a place of worship. The kaplica pw. Opatrzności Bożej was built on a site that was once part of the larger Rakowiec neighborhood, a place that had been historically attached to the parish in Służewiec. Its construction was born out of a desire to satisfy the burgeoning religious needs of a growing community. The story of the kaplica pw. Opatrzności Bożej is intricately intertwined with that of the parish’s history. Originally, Rakowiec belonged to the parish in Służewiec, but its separation and growth led to its association with Jazdów. In the mid-20th century, the area fell under the jurisdiction of the parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the World. Its priest was inspired by the growing community and sent an official request to the authorities seeking approval for a new church building in the emerging district.

For a parish priest to build a church it needs a lot of perseverance. In 1956, the priest sent a formal request to the authorities for permission to erect a new church on the growing housing estate. Bohdan Pniewski, a prominent architect, designed the building. The initial blueprint was met with hesitation and a lack of approval. But unwavering in their faith and driven by the community’s needs, the parish members started a temporary project. In 1960, a wooden chapel was erected, marking the beginning of their spiritual endeavor. However, the struggle for the kaplica pw. Opatrzności Bożej was far from over. The authorities made it difficult for the church to function. Despite their hardships, the parish community continued its efforts, organizing regular masses and expanding the chapel. The persistent faith and unwavering dedication of the parish community finally paid off in 1972, when the authorities greenlit the church’s full construction on a smaller plot than originally intended. The new church was consecrated in 1979. It stands as a testament to the courage and determination of the people of Rakowiec, a symbol of their resilience in the face of adversity.
