Perhaps, one of the most compelling stories etched into Warsaw’s landscape is that of the kaplica pw. MB Częstochowskiej. This house of worship stands as a testament to faith. It embodies resilience and community spirit.

The history of the kaplica pw. MB Częstochowskiej is deeply intertwined with the Parafia Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej. This Roman Catholic parish plays a vital role in the Śródmieście district of Warsaw.

In the early 20th century, a growing population necessitated a new place of worship. A modest wooden chapel dedicated to Matka Boska Częstochowska was erected in 1907 or 1908. It was founded by Father Wacław Rytel on land donated by Julian Beisert. This marked the humble beginnings of what would become the Parafia Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej.

Over time, the need for a larger church became evident. Construction of a new church began in 1923. The church was designed by Hugo Kudera. This ambitious project reflected the community’s growing devotion and aspirations.

In 1933, the new church was consecrated by Cardinal Kakowski. The event was graced by the presence of President Ignacy Mościcki and Marshal Józef Piłsudski. This underscored the significance of the church within Polish society. The church was conceived as a votive offering for Poland’s victory against the Bolsheviks in 1920.

Tragedy struck during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. German bombs decimated the church. Dozens of people perished within its walls. Despite the devastation, the spirit of the community remained unbroken.

After the war, the communist authorities forbade the reconstruction. In 1968, Father Adam Tymieniecki became parish priest. Due to the construction of the Łazienkowska Route, the parish seat was moved. The new church was built at Zagórna 5.

Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński laid the cornerstone in 1979. It came from the Jasna Góra Monastery. The new church was designed by Stanisław and Piotr Marzyński. Bishop Jerzy Modzelewski consecrated the new church in 1983.

Today, the kaplica pw. MB Częstochowskiej continues to serve as a spiritual home for many. It hosts various religious activities. These include the Living Rosary and the parish choir. The church also supports youth and family ministries.

The “Lilia” parish newsletter keeps the community informed. It contains articles and parish announcements. The kaplica pw. MB Częstochowskiej stands as a beacon of hope and faith in the heart of Warsaw.

Now, take a moment to reflect on the profound history and enduring legacy of the kaplica pw. MB Częstochowskiej.
