What secrets does the seemingly unassuming Kaple sv. Anny hold? This chapel, nestled at the intersection of Branická and Dolnokrčská streets in Prague 4 – Krč, whispers stories of resilience and transformation. Kaple sv. Anny stands as a solitary sentinel, a testament to its rich past. The current Kaple sv. Anny wasn’t the first sacred structure on this site. A smaller chapel was erected in 1859. This original structure served the Roman Catholic community of Dolní Krč. It was replaced in 1881 by the larger, more stately neoclassical Kaple sv. Anny we see today. The design came from the hand of builder Misterka. The chapel was consecrated in August 1881, becoming a focal point for the community. The story of Kaple sv. Anny is one of survival amidst change. In 1979, the surrounding buildings of Dolní Krč were demolished to make way for the Jižní spojka highway. Kaple sv. Anny, miraculously, remained. It stood alone, its condition deteriorating, no longer used for liturgical purposes. Then, in 1989, the Armabeton company stepped in, documenting and undertaking a much-needed reconstruction. Today, Kaple sv. Anny serves the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. It has been a listed cultural monument since 1992. The chapel’s architecture is simple yet elegant. The single-nave structure features a rectangular layout with beveled corners. Its pitched roof, with a polygonal apse, is crowned by a small bell tower with an onion dome and cross. A modern enclosing wall adds a touch of privacy and protection. Kaple sv. Anny may be small, but its story is grand. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, enduring change and finding new life. As you stand before it, remember its journey. It is a journey mirrored in the city itself: a tale of transformation and enduring spirit.
