Timeless stones whisper stories. This unassuming chapel stands before you. It is the Chapel of the Former Military Cemetery in Prague. Its history is etched into its very being.

This Baroque chapel is more than just a building. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Prague’s past. Originally built in 1753 it served a military cemetery. The cemetery itself was established even earlier in 1732. The chapel was nestled within the walls of that cemetery. Its interior boasts barely visible frescoes. They depict scenes of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary and various saints.

The cemetery wasn’t just for common soldiers. High-ranking officers were also buried there. Even Prussian General Gerhard Scharnhorst found his final resting place here. He died in Prague en route to Vienna. He was to persuade Austria to join the coalition against Napoleon. Imagine his final moments under this very roof.

But the cemetery’s story is one of change. By the end of the 19th century it was closed. Graves were moved to Olšany Cemetery. The chapel though remained. Its purpose shifted radically. In the 20th century it served as a substation. A diesel generator hummed inside its walls supplying power to nearby factories.

The chapel’s history is a tapestry woven from war and peace. From faith and industry. From life and death. From loss and remembrance. The former military cemetery itself has long been gone. The chapel remains a poignant reminder of those who once served. It’s a testament to Prague’s enduring spirit.

Today restored and integrated into a new park the chapel stands as a precious piece of Prague’s heritage. A quiet monument to a forgotten past. A small structure that whispers the sounds of history. It invites reflection upon its past and upon the lives it once sheltered. A humbling experience.
