“O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam, attendite et videte, si est dolor sicut dolor meus”. This Latin inscription, meaning “You who pass by the way, look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow”, greets you at the entrance of the Kaple Bolestné Panny Marie. The Kaple Bolestné Panny Marie, nestled beneath the Barrandov Rocks in Prague, has a rather unusual past. This small, circular chapel with its distinctive dome wasn’t always a place of worship. It started its life in 1742 as a gunpowder magazine for the French troops who were besieging Prague. After the siege, the building found a new purpose as a storage space for quarry workers. In 1847, the quarry owner, Mr. Herget, decided to transform the structure into the Kaple Bolestné Panny Marie. He dedicated it to the memory of his daughter, Marie, who tragically lost her life in an accident in one of the quarries.
