Considered one of Switzerland’s architectural gems, Kantonsschule Freudenberg stands as a testament to post-war modernism. It is more than just a school. It is a landmark.
The Kantonsschule Freudenberg was built between 1954 and 1960. Jacques Schader designed it. The school shares the Freudenberg complex with Kantonsschule Enge. The location was formerly the Freudenberg estate. The Bodmer family owned it.
Did you know that Kantonsschule Freudenberg has been under monument protection since 1987? Its architectural significance cannot be overstated. The school’s design emphasizes light. Each room receives light from at least two sides. The rooms are large and have big windows.
Originally, the site was meant to house the Kantonale Handelsschule. It was planned to accommodate about 700 students. Also, part of the Realgymnasium of Kantonsschule Zürich was located here. That was about 500 students. In 1959, students from the Realgymnasium moved into the northern building. These students lived to the left of Lake Zurich and the Limmat.
Until 1976, it was known as Gymnasium Freudenberg. It offered traditional A, B, and D types of Matura. From the beginning, the Gymnasium shared the science wing with the Kantonale Handelsschule. Today, this connection remains with Kantonsschule Enge. The Kantonsschule Enge evolved from the Handelsschule.
In 1976, the Gymnasium Freudenberg was renamed. It became Kantonsschule Freudenberg, Literatur- und Realgymnasium. The Kantonsschule Enge was called Kantonsschule Freudenberg. It was Wirtschaftsgymnasium und Handelsschule. These names were confusing. In 1979, they were simplified to Kantonsschule Freudenberg and Kantonsschule Enge.
Since 2013, the school has been known as Kantonsschule Freudenberg. This includes the Alt-Neusprachliches Gymnasium Freudenberg and the Liceo Artistico. The gymnasium itself is called Gymnasium Freudenberg. In 1976, Kantonsschule Freudenberg introduced coeducation. Today, the Gymnasium has around 660 students. There are also about 123 teachers.
The Kantonsschule Freudenberg is a long-term Gymnasium. It leads to a federally recognized Matura. This takes six years. Students can choose a linguistic profile. Both ancient and modern languages are available. Since 2010, there has been a German-French immersion program. The Liceo Artistico offers a bilingual Italian-German Matura.
Jürg Conzett, a construction engineer, is one of the school’s well-known alumni. Valeria Gemelli is the current head of the Kantonsschule Freudenberg since 2018.
