Hidden within the embrace of the Blue Mountains lies Kanimbla Valley. It whispers tales of ancient battles and the enduring spirit of nature. Kanimbla Valley was named by the Gundungurra people. It means “camping or fighting ground”. This reflects its rich Aboriginal heritage. Dreamtime stories speak of Gurangatch, the Rainbow Serpent, and Mirragan, the Quoll. Their epic battle shaped the very landscape. As Gurangatch fled, he carved the waterways and billabongs that grace Kanimbla Valley today. Many believe these waterholes are still inhabited by Gurangatch’s descendants.

When European settlers first ventured into Kanimbla Valley, they encountered a dense wilderness teeming with life. Platypus, echidnas, kangaroos, quolls, dingoes, and wombats thrived in this untouched paradise. The valley floor, crisscrossed by the Cox’s River, offered fertile land. Towering trees stood sentinel over the landscape. Thomas Jones, an early explorer, braved the rugged terrain in 1819. His trek across Kanimbla Valley proved a formidable challenge. The valley’s beauty belied its untamed nature.

In 1824, James John Oxley and Nathaniel Norton received the first European land grant in Kanimbla Valley. This vast expanse eventually encompassed over 12,500 acres. The valley’s fertile river flats proved ideal for farming, shaping its destiny. Today, Kanimbla Valley remains a haven for livestock. Its agricultural roots are deeply intertwined with its identity. But Kanimbla Valley offers more than just pastoral beauty. The Cox’s River campground beckons adventurers. It provides a base for exploring the valley’s natural wonders.

A walk along the historic Six Foot Track leads to a marvel of engineering. Bowtell’s Swing Bridge, suspended high above the Cox’s River, offers breathtaking views and an adrenaline rush. Built in 1992 by the Royal Australian Engineers, the bridge honors Corporal Bob Bowtell. He tragically lost his life during the Vietnam War. For anglers, the Cox’s River is a paradise. Its waters teem with Rainbow and Brown Trout, promising a rewarding fishing experience.
