A battle. Yes, a real battle took place right here in Kanie.

Welcome to Kanie a village in east-central Poland. Today we will delve into its history. We will discover some interesting facts.

Kanie is located in the Masovian Voivodeship. It lies near Brwinów and Pruszków. Warsaw is also not far away.

Once this entire area belonged to the Potocki family of counts. In 1847 they moved families from Gąsin to Kanie. They exchanged land in the process.

Fast forward to September 1939. The 36th Infantry Regiment clashed with German tanks here. This delayed the Wehrmacht’s advance on Warsaw. It was a crucial moment in the defense of the capital.

After 1955 Kanie began to grow. Residents successfully lobbied for a stop on the WKD line. This connected Grodzisk Mazowiecki to Warsaw. The WKD is a light rail line.

Later in the 1980s more changes occurred. Farmland was converted into housing. This led to a population increase in Kanie.

But Kanie’s history stretches back even further. Archaeological discoveries reveal a fascinating past. In the 1970s over a hundred ancient bloomery furnaces were found. These were used to smelt iron in the Middle Ages. Two metallurgical settlements were also unearthed. These settlements date back to before the Common Era. They were part of the Mazovian Metallurgical Center. Imagine the scene long ago. The area was filled with the sounds of ironworking.

Today Kanie is home to over 2400 people. It is a vibrant village with a rich history. Several notable figures have called Kanie home. Kazimierz Dux a professor of medicine lived here. Antoni Heda a general in the Polish Army was also a resident. Kazimierz Kutz a film director and senator lived many years in Kanie. Leszek Kryst a surgeon and Warsaw Uprising fighter also called Kanie home.

As we leave Kanie today remember its story. It is a story of battles of industry and of people who shaped its identity.
