The whispers of history echo along the waters of the Kanał Wawerski. This isn’t just any canal. It’s a lifeline a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring spirit of Warsaw.
For centuries a modest stream meandered through the landscape. The Kanał Wawerski’s roots are ancient. Its course is etched on maps dating back to the 18th century. Rizzi Zannoni’s map of 1772 shows it reaching Dębe Wielkie.
But the Kanał Wawerski we see today is a product of the interwar period. In 1924 a company called the Spółka Wodna Obwodu Wawerskiego was formed. Its mission was ambitious to drain the marshy Wawerska lowland. This area stretched from Saska Kępa to the towns of Wawer Ząhadź and Letnisko Falenica. Thousands of hectares were transformed. The Kanał Wawerski was a key player in this massive undertaking.
Imagine the scale of the project. The canal’s construction lasted from 1927 to 1935. Other canals were built and connected. This included the Kanały Kawęczyński Ulgi Gocławski and Wystawowy. These canals linked the Kanał Kamionkowsko-Wawerski and the Kanał Zagożdżński. This intricate network channeled water through the Wawerskie Zakole to the Kamionkowskie Lake and the Vistula River.
The goal was to develop this area. Warsaw had big plans. This included building a large airport. The Kanał Wawerski was crucial to this plan. It played a vital role in making the land suitable for development.
Even with the colossal effort the problem of flooding wasn’t entirely solved. The Kamionkowskie Lake often overflowed. More work was needed. After World War II the Kanał Nowe Ujście was built. This provided another outlet for water. The regulation of the Vistula River itself also aided significantly. This lowered the water table. The Kanał Wawerski’s appearance changed. But its basic route its function has remained.
