Have you ever imagined a canal born from swampy valleys? Before you lies the Kanał Bródnowski a testament to Warsaw’s ingenious past. This isn’t just any waterway. It’s a lifeline carved through history.

The Kanał Bródnowski was dug in the second half of the 19th century. Its purpose was simple drain the marshy lowlands. These lowlands were once home to the now-vanished rivers Brodnia and Rewa. The canal’s story is one of adaptation. The construction of the Kanał Żerański in the 1960s split the Kanał Bródnowski. It now flows as two distinct parts: the upper and lower Kanał Bródnowski.

The upper Kanał Bródnowski often called the Kanał Bródnowski Górny is approximately 10.94 kilometers long. A significant portion about 3.6 kilometers runs through Białołęka district. It’s fed largely by groundwater from two pumping stations in Targówek and Bródno. Interestingly this canal initially received industrial wastewater and liquid manure. This was before the closure of industrial plants in Targówek Fabryczny and the end of pig farming in PGR Bródno. Today its sanitary condition has drastically improved. Fish and typical lowland river animals now inhabit its waters a remarkable transformation.

The upper Kanał Bródnowski has no natural tributaries. It’s sustained by drainage canals. The most substantial of these are the Kanał Żóbkowski also known as Rów Żóbkowski the Kanał Zaciszański the Kanał Drewnowski and the Kanał Lewandów. In its lower reaches through Białołęka the canal’s course was altered during the construction of the Kanał Żerański. It empties into the Kanał Żerański near a road bridge in the Brzeziny neighborhood. Remnants of the old course are still visible near Białołęcka and Zdziarska streets a silent reminder of past changes.

Currently the Kanał Bródnowski is undergoing a revitalization project. This exciting initiative involves cleaning the banks removing sediment strengthening the embankments and creating a 1.3-hectare retention reservoir. The project plans include a swimming area a kayak landing new footbridges and pedestrian and bicycle paths. New green spaces will line its banks. The Kanał Bródnowski is being transformed from a drainage canal to a vibrant recreational space.

The Kanał Bródnowski isn’t just a drainage system. It’s a living artery that weaves through Warsaw’s history. A walk along its banks offers a unique perspective on the city’s past its environmental challenges and its commitment to a sustainable future. The Kanał Bródnowski is more than just a canal. It’s a living story waiting to be explored.
