Hidden amidst the bustling energy of Hong Kong, Kan Lau Po unveils a captivating tale. Kan Lau Po is a tranquil bay, a hidden gem nestled along the coastline. Kan Lau Po is more than just a picturesque bay. Its history is intertwined with the surrounding area, which has undergone remarkable transformations. Nearby, Shenzhen’s story unfolds, a narrative of “Shenzhen speed”. In 1979, Shenzhen was a modest border town of around 30,000, a mere customs stop between Hong Kong and mainland China. Designated as a special economic zone, Shenzhen attracted foreign investment and technology. The city’s infrastructure rapidly expanded, with new roads, housing, schools, and essential utilities accommodating a surging population. From 1980 onwards, Shenzhen’s growth exploded. Domestic and foreign capital poured in. Wages and living standards within the special economic zone outpaced the national average. A wave of workers and professionals migrated to Shenzhen, fueling factories producing electronics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, building materials, and processed foods. This boom also invigorated the surrounding agricultural areas, boosting production of poultry, livestock, and vegetables. This rapid progress earned the nickname “Shenzhen speed.” Shenzhen became a testing ground for economic reforms, including the re-establishment of stock markets. These initiatives were later adopted across China. Modern Shenzhen boasts extensive railway connections to Guangzhou, Beijing, and Fujian province. Expressways link the city to other coastal areas. An international airport and large seaport container terminals facilitate global trade. The city’s commitment to education is evident in its own universities, including Shenzhen University, founded in 1983, alongside branch campuses of prestigious institutions like Peking University and Tsinghua University. The iconic Ping An Finance Center, one of the world’s tallest buildings, punctuates the city’s skyline. Kan Lau Po, in proximity to this urban dynamism, offers a serene counterpoint. It’s a reminder of the natural beauty that coexists with human ambition.
