“A lookout.” That’s one meaning of the name Kainohana. Today we stand before Kainohana Elementary School in Matsudo.

Kainohana Elementary School opened its doors on May 1, 2019. The school’s address is 8-10 Koganekahara, Matsudo, Chiba. The postal code is 270-0021. Kainohana Elementary School is known locally as Matsudo Shiritsu Kainohana Shōgakkō.

But there’s another Kainohana in Hawaii. Kilohana School in Moloka’i was once the Ualapu’e Hospital. It was renamed Kilohana School in 1935. Kilohana means a lookout. It also means the working of patterns in color on tapa. The east end of Moloka’i was the tapa-making district. Perhaps this is where Kilohana School got its name.

Kilohana School in Moloka’i maintains visible construction from its hospital days. A historical groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1976. New classrooms opened in January 1977.

Kilohana School sits under keawe trees. The school carries legends of old. It is a famous registered historical site in Hawaii.

The Moloka’i school colors are red and gold. Its mascot is the Ram. The school motto is “Hana like no na Keiki” meaning “Working together for all children”.
